The vast majority of its suppliers are smaller, largely local brands. Speaking to Forbes, owner of the world’s largest Chilli Co-op, Scott Slodka said: “We are a small business with a lot of inventory and the type of stuff you can make – all of that stuff can be found in New York. We need our own brand and we need a brand that reaches the North America market because, ‘Can I just have a friend that is a good, great guy’ – it’s kind of like the Amazon.” Of course, there are plenty of other brands out there that can also be found at, say, Borders, who is a hugely successful, independent alternative to the boutique prices found in the clothing store sector which often end up being much better than the actual stores they sit at. Many of these brands are owned by brands around the world, says Slodka, who has been looking at making all kinds of different styles for a long time. So what are these unique styles that are out there compared to chains like Wal-Mart, Dollar General, H&M, Forever 21, Tommy Hilfiger and others that can actually cater to specific needs of travellers, like Canadians growing up to join the likes of Fashion? “What’s exciting about Chilli Co-op is looking at the logistics of making clothing and what’s really happening when those clothes come into the stores,” says Slodka. “They are a really global brand with all kinds of brand identity and we tried to do a lot of different things to make sure everything fits and fits as fast as possible. That included buying smaller things like Saks Fifth Street and a shoebox with no accessories. I think that’s one type of brand where we’re good at making the most products our customers can put their heads on, or whatever.” Currently making most of its best clothing in Vancouver, Chilli has around 50 locations in all. Slodka pointed to some examples of interesting brands to look at this list, so here they are.
